American Cars

American cars and the automotive industry in the USA

The automotive industry in the United States began in the 1890s and was the largest for more than a century. Even today it is the second biggest automotive industry in the world (Japan is the first one). They make between 7 and 10 million cars per year. A far more interesting fact is that American cars are affordable. For example, they are almost 60% more affordable than some, equivalent cars, made by other manufacturers. This also applies to more powerful cars.

The peak of the American car industry is muscle cars. Their main characteristics are huge engines, up to 8L, a huge amount of torque and increased fuel consumption. These cars usually have impressive acceleration, while the top speed isn’t as high as you may believe. In a straight line, they are the fastest production cars in their class.

Some of the biggest names in the American car industry are Ford, Chrysler, and General Motors. These are the more popular American car brands, but we must add Cadillac, Buick, Chevrolet, and Tesla.

The oldest car manufacturers that make amazing cars even today

Ford is the oldest car manufacturer and one of the biggest on the planet. The revenue of the company is $120 billion. They hire more than 220.000 people around the globe and they produce more than 2.5 million cars per year. Beside family cars, Ford also produces trucks, tractors, buses and pick-up vehicles.

The most interesting car is the Ford GT. Of all American cars, I believe the GT is the most appealing one. The original one was developed in the 60s, for the race of Le Mann. A few years back, they made a new version that was also very popular, but it shared the design with the original GT 40. In 2018, Ford will reveal all-new GT. It is the first American car that has the performance to match European hyper cars. It means that acceleration, top speed and handling are all impressive. The engine in this model is 3.5L, with a turbocharger, producing 600HP.

Besides hyper cars, Ford makes some of the best hatchbacks on the market. As you may believe, the one that deserves to be mentioned is Focus. It is powered by a 2.0L engine, producing 160HP (123HP version is available as well) and it achieves 25 mpg. As an everyday car, the Ford Focus is more than just desirable and affordable. This model is also available as a sedan and with 1.0L Eco Boost engine which gets up to 40 mpg.

The Ford Fiesta is a smaller version. It is even available with a 1.0L engine that is rated as one of the most economical cars on the market. This model has been extremely popular with teenagers since the 90s.

In the last, few years, Ford invested a lot of funds into developing economical engines. The mentioned, Eco Boost vision is the product of that development. The main idea is to make cars that still offer decent performances, but can also maximize the fuel efficiency and produce less pollution.
